The Mozilla Seabird, part of the Mozilla Labs’ Concept Series, is an experiment in how users might interact with their mobile content as devices and technology advances. Drawing on insights culled from the Mozilla community through the project’s blog, a focus quickly developed around frustrating physical interactions. While mobile CPUs, connectivity and development platforms begin approaching that of desktops, the lagging ability to efficiently input information has grown ever more pronounced.

With mobile phone companies such as Samsung, LG and Motorola moving towards display applications for projectors, the technology remains open for expanding user interaction and input at the same time. The Seabird, on just a flat surface, enables netbook-quality interaction by working with the projector’s angular distortion to deliver interface, rather than content. With the benefit of a dock, each projector works independently and delivers laptop levels of efficiency.

The form development took its cues from various aerodynamic, avian and decidedly feminine forms. Its erect posture intends a sense of poise while its supine conformity to the hand reconciles that with the user’s desire for digital control. The curvature of the back also serves a functional role in elevating the projector lens elements when lying flat.

The Seabird, then, introduces a few possibilities into how user interaction might evolve with the advancing motion capture and projector driven innovation in the market. First out, the Seabird imagines how a multiple use dongle might augment the crowded gestural interface with greater precision and direct manipulation of content in 3D space.

The Smart Finger is a very neat concept device from designers Choi Hyong-Suk, Jung Ji-hye & Yoo-Jin Park that consists of two wearable silicon finger-covers that let you measure the length, breadth, or volume of any object. For small objects, you’d wear both sensors on one hand; for larger objects, you’d wear one sensor on each hand. While we don’t want for measuring tools in this day and age, the designers’ logic is that a measurement device based on and integrated with the human user’s own measurements would fall in line with a long tradition of measuring things in terms of our bodies, and that the Smart Finger measuring process would thus be more intuitive and less annoying than other measuring tools and digital measuring intstruments.

As for how the Smart Finger would work: It shoots a beam of light from one finger to the other and back and estimates a length based on the time this takes. Do this twice in two dimensions and you can measure area; do this three times and you’ve got a volume estimate. These latter two measurements sound like they’d be less useful in that they’d get less accurate if the object being measured wasn’t a perfect rectangle or rectangular prism. Still: Neat, creative gadget idea; if these were available to consumers and reasonably inexpensive, it seems plausible that people would find household uses for them, if only as a Brookstone-type curiosity.

As green gadget chargers go, this one is pretty low-tech. But as it is made by Nokia, and aimed at developing countries, it is also likely that it will last forever.

The bike charger relies on the well-tested and durable bottle-dynamo to convert your pedaling into power, and the phone is held to the handlebars with a big rubber-band. In between is a box of circuitry to give a nice smooth current to any device equipped with a 2mm jack.

The Nokia charger will first be available in Kenya for around 15 euro ($18) and will go on sale worldwide by the end of this year. So how much power can our legs produce? Quite a lot, surprisingly: Pedal at 6 mph for just 10 minutes, and you’ll get almost half an hour of talk time or a stunning 37 hours of standby. The minimum speed required to charge a phone is 4 mph, or walking speed, so even a modestly jaunty commute should be enough to keep your cell going for a whole day.

We like the simplicity of Nokia’s gadget. Other solutions tend towards the complicated, with magnets or hub dynamos providing the juice. With bikes, though, simple is almost always best.

Morpho Clock

Emphasizing the way we use ordinary products in our day-to-day life, Greek designer Venia Giota has come up with a classical time-telling device dubbed “Morpho” that has been redesigned in order to have a new aesthetic value, to become minimal and be more playful. The multifunctional device transforms from a wristwatch to a table clock, conferring the user with an opportunity to possess the services of two products at the same time.

Finished in stainless steel (dial and clasping) and rubber (strap), the Morpho (meaning changed or modified) is a very simple, minimalist watch with a clever touch of the digital analogue antithesis that provides time in a very clear language of symbols.

How does it work?

At first glance, you see a clock with flexible structure which allows you to interact and play with it creating various forms. The linear form and the playful nature of the materials make it easy to transform from a very clear and simple object into a more complex and interesting one. Thus, the user has the ability to play with and change the form the way he wants. The user also can place it in various positions, e.g. on a horizontal surface such as a desk or a side table.

When the watch is in its case, the magnifier on the surface of the package magnifies the dial of the watch hence transforming it into a table clock, allowing the users to see the time from distance. When the watch is worn, the packaging can be reused as a photo frame by placing a picture under the magnifier.

German Roll Top : The Laptop from the Future

The future of the laptop and the tablet PC has been rolled up into one.

German designer Evgeny Orkin has developed a concept design for The Rolltop. The Roll top computer is constructed of a flexible OLED display that wraps around the removable power supply stand. Tucked into the power stand is a webcam, speaker sound bar, USB ports, and the power supply and power cord.

German Roll Top 's screen can either be formed into a 13-inch conventional laptop (well sort of) or rolled flat for a 17-inch tablet with stylus. Another great feature is you can stand it upright with a fold out support leg and watch videos like a flat screen TV. And with multi-touch technology you don’t need a separate mouse and keyboard because everything is right on the screen. It might be hard to type on a digital QWERTY keyboard but it might be like a large iPhone.

I know its just in the concept Roll Top form but it would really be cool to see one in person and maybe use one some day. To really appreciate the capabilities and possibilities of The Rolltop check out this video from Orkin Design.

The machine is capable of analyzing crying power, frequencies, correlation with established patterns and the length of crying intervals. It claims the machine is clinically certified and that a survey (participant numbers are not provided) of new parents found the machine to be 98% reliable.

Additionally, many of the symptoms of crying can be simply cured by a cuddle. If a baby is bored, stressed or annoyed, just picking them up and soothing should help to stop the tears. Luxury USB drives come in all different types, some are of course over the top and look ridiculous. These little USB Men manage to actually look refined and even cute. All the while still definitely being a higher end USB drive. These little guys bend so that you can have them sit patiently at the edge of your desk, just waiting for their chance to be useful once again.
They come in both silver as well as gold forms.
No matter which one you choose though, these are still going to be the exact same price. Admittedly, the price isn’t too pretty either. Each one is going to cost you £55.00 or about $88. For that price, one might hope for at least 4 or even 2GB of memory.

Motorola has added another smartphone to its range of Google Android powered handsets, the Motorola Backflip, which is their third Android handset.

The Motorola Backflip features a 3.1 inch HVGA screen, and it comes with Google Android and Motorola’s Motoblur, plus a five megapixel camera with a built in LED flash and autofocus.

Other specification include WiFi, plus 3G 850/1900/2100 (quadband GSM),HSDPA 7.2, a Micro USB connector, stereo Bluetooth, and the ability to record video at up to 24 frames per second.

The inetersting feature on the Motorola Backflip is the reverse flip QWERTY keyboard, and the keyboard is located on the outside of the handset, and it flips outwards.

On the back of the touchscreen there is a trackpad that can be used to navigate through the menus and perform functions on the handset, it certainly sounds very interesting.

There are no details on pricing or availability as yet on the Motorola Backflip Google Android Smartphone.

This week’s Digital Content Expo at Miraikan is one of the less corporate tech shows on the Tokyo calendar, so it’s no surprise to see some pretty kooky engineering like the Funbrella from a grad-student team at Osaka University.

Kansai’s finest came up with the concept of ‘tele-rain’ to allow anyone holding the Funbrella to experience what it might be like to get caught in a hailstorm on a sunny day, a shower of marbles, or even a downpour of snakes and hamburgers. Er, yeah.

If that makes no sense at all, then check out their vid for an explanation – skip to 1min 40secs in if you just want the hardcore science. Basically, they’ve connected a computer and a vibrating mechanism based on audio speaker technology to an ordinary umbrella and let their imaginations run riot.

I asked Associate Professor Yuichi Itoh what started it all: “The main theme of our laboratory is to develop novel user interfaces with virtual reality technology. So, our students decided to create something new with the technologies researched in our laboratory.”

But why the umbrella theme? “At that time, we had lots of so-called [sudden downpours of] guerrilla rain [in other parts of Japan]. The TV news spoke of its impact on our daily lives, but we had never experienced it, [so] we decided to develop the Funbrella to experience various kinds of rain, with the technology generating accurate vibrations.”

More romantically, the team suggests it could help folk separated by physical distance share the feeling of gutsing out the same storm together, perhaps while talking on the phone.

As for commercial applications, there aren’t really any yet, but Itoh and his crew are all ears if you have any suggestions for the Funbrella.

Japanese Cigarette Machines Can Detect Age Of Buyers

Gadget Lab predicts that there will be new fashion amongst underaged Japanese smokers: stupid, wispy, half-grown bum-fluff mustaches. Why? Age-detecting cigarette machines. In order to combat illegal vending sales to the under 20s, Fujitaka Co has come up with a machine which uses a digital camera to study the faces of potential buyers and detect “wrinkles surrounding the eyes, bone structure and skin sags”.
The problem is that the device only achieves a 90% hit rate, meaning that “minors that look older, and baby-faced adults” could fool the machine. These unfortunates will be asked to insert their driving licenses.
The potential for insult here is high, although I know a few people who would be so happy to be thought younger than they are that the temporary lack of fags* would be trivial. We suggest that to be fully effective, though, the machine should detect sallow skin, sunken cheeks and yellowing teeth.
